Sortie: One Sheet

Just finished the first draft of our one sheet. We have settled on the name Sortie, as it is a flying term used to describe a solitary mission with one ship, which sums it up pretty well. Also, compared to our other names, it's great. Happy with how this is looking.

Project Balloon: Marco 3D Model Rough Model.

An initial foray in Mudbox, tried sculpting Marco but it didn't go so well, think he'd be better suited to being modelled in Maya. Excuse the nakedness.

Visual Arts and Animation: Mudbox

We had a guest teacher in today who gave us an introduction to Mudbox and sculpting. I have been waiting to start sculpting more organic shapes for a while so I loved this lesson. I was very pleased with how my dinosaur turned out, and even the little test sphere came out well; I turned it into a planet because why not?

Visual Arts and Animation: Pixel Art

Pixel Art from last week. Quite enjoyed this work. Not sure it's my strong point but it was fun nonetheless. Might have to try out some more pixel art in the coming weeks.

Project Balloon: Modelling the First Airship

I've spent the last couple of days modelling a preliminary model of the airship we are going to use in the game. This is only a rough model for now, but it's good to see the idea coming together. The way I envision it, Marco, our protagonist, was a humble sky fisher and this was his handmade vessel. But in the wake of the attack, he became the last line of defense and made some DIY adjustments to his ship, making it combat ready. So the look and feel of the ship should be very rough and hand made. This was why when I made the wooden textures that are used on the ship and the figure head, I wanted to make it look like the paint was flaking away, and that it had been bolted together in a slapdash fashion.

Games Encounters: Project Balloon Concept Art

Visual Arts and Design: Muscles

This week, much like the previous skeleton assignment, we were focusing on human anatomy to better improve our knowledge and skill when it comes to drawing the human form. This week we were focusing on muscles, as the nest logical step up from the skeleton. I quite enjoyed this assignment, partly because muscles are interesting to draw due to their very organic lines and curves, but also because it increased my knowledge of muscle structure, which will further improve my drawings. I began with some quick pen sketches focusing on the chest and leg, just to get to grips with drawing muscles, and to do more close up detailed drawings of the muscle areas.
This is my final illustration of the muscles.

Games Encounters: Spring Submission. 'Codename Balloon' preliminary concept art.

We're pitching the game as a flying game where you control a hot air balloon/airship and have to fight of the invading forces and avoid obstacles. The game is set high in the sky on floating islands, and our protagonist Marco is the sole defender of these aerial invaders. This was the original 20 minute sketch I did when I first came up with the idea.
Using this as a basis for style, and looking at games like Valiant Hearts for further influence, I revised the design, made Marco look older which was the original intention, and added colour. This is the result.

Visual Arts and Animation: Starship Enterprise

Managed to finish modelling the Starship Enterprise. I am really pleased with how this turned out as it looks exactly how I imagined it would, which tends to be rare when I'm modelling. I didn't have a texture to apply to the ship and I couldn't seem to find any good ones of the ship textures either, so I opted for a nice mental ray render and space background instead.

Personal Work: Lego Ant Man

To coincide with the release of Marvel's first Ant Man trailer, I decided to draw Ant Man in Lego form. Because that's kinda my biggest hobby.

Visual Arts and Animation: Starship Enterprise Progress

Our task for Maya this week was to model the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek, to the correct scale and proportions using reference images. I enjoyed modelling this, and I feel like my modelling has improved hugely. Here is the progress so far.

Visual Arts and Animation: The Lizard

Back in lessons after the christmas break. I was feeling a little rusty but we started back with a Photoshop painting tutorial of a lizard creature. We used a new technique of applying actual textures to our drawings to add depth and detail, this is definitely a technique I'll be using from now on as it blends really nicely and creates a huge amount of visible detail that would have taken a long time to paint by hand. I'm really pleased with how this guy turned out, and whilst it's still a little unfinished in places, I'm ready to move on and start something new where I can employ this method and put it into practice.
